Mid Wales Gin Festival

Recently, I interviewed Laura Gallagher of Arvon Ale House all about a new and exciting event happening in the town of Llandrindod Wells very soon.

llandrindodlife: What is the event?

Laura Gallagher: The event we have planned is the first ever Mid Wales Gin Festival!

When and where is the Mid Wales Gin Festival being held?

It is on Saturday 27th May 2017, at Pavilion Mid Wales in Llandrindod Wells.

Who can attend? Where can the tickets be purchased?

Anyone over 18 can attend. The tickets cost £8 and can be purchased from Arvon Ale House, Temple Street, Llandrindod Wells or online from Eventbrite (online booking fee applies). If you want to be sure of your place at the event then buy in advance but this is a big venue so we hope that there will be some tickets available at the door. The ticket price also includes a complementary commemorative gin glass and a gin bottle.

What will be happening at the event?

Well firstly there's the gins. We have sourced all the gins available from across Wales and the bordering counties. So a selection of 38 gins from 19 producers. There will be producers there too, to answer any questions you might have about gin.  And believe me they love talking about gin and how they make theirs.

Then there’s the party!  We have made the theme Swing Time (1930’s, 1940’s).  There will be a 6-piece swing band called Donnie Joe’s American SwingBand, playing at both sessions.  MidWales Jive and Aber Swing are coming along and will be providing a free swing-dance workshop.  So lots of music from the swing era and lots of dancing.

Snack plates will be available - all the things that people on Facebook told us went well with gin.

There will also be a full bar at the event serving hot drinks and a range of soft and alcoholic drinks.

What is the sell out feature of the event? Why will people want to attend?

Local and lovely gins!  Swing music and dancing! Beautiful costumes! Beautiful venue!

What's so special about gin? Why a gin festival?

All of these gins are artisan products, made in small batches and are not readily available.  Some of the gins have been specially made with the festival in mind.  At our festival they will all be available under one roof.  The producers use local botanicals picked from the surrounding area, even from their own farms and gardens!  Each gin is made in a slightly different way and this results in them being different from each other.  Each gin capturing the essence of where it is made and the passion of the people that make it.  We thought that deserved a celebration.

Will there be a particular dress code for the festival?

There isn’t a dress code; people can wear what they feel comfortable in.  However lots of people are dressing up to match the swing theme of the event.  So 1930’s/1940’s/swing style and there are prizes for best dressed.  So dress casual or smart, or dress like you’ve just walked out of a black and white movie!  Or somewhere in between - add a hat or just wear a feather in your hair!  It’s up to you.

How do you think the Mid Wales Gin Festival will benefit the community of Llandrindod Wells?

We want to make sure that Llandrindod Wells is recognised for all the wonderful things that happen here.  We hope that bringing the gin revolution out of the cities and into our town will help with that.  Also we want to see the beautiful Pavilion building in full swing!

Can you describe the event in three words?

Gin.  Swing-time. Party.

This sounds like a tremendous new exciting event that the community of Llandrindod Wells should feel very lucky to have a chance to be a part of. So get yourself down to Pavilion Mid Wales on 27th May to see for yourself what the Mid Wales Gin Festival is all about; just another shining example of just one of the brilliant events happening here in #llandrindodlife!

With thanks to Laura Gallagher for her time and the pictures included in this blog post.

APRIL SOCIAL RUN

The last llandrindodlife social run was held on February 19th. This was a highly successful event with many different people from within the community coming together for a little trot around the town.

As expected, there were some experienced runners who attended who have been pounding the streets around Llandrindod Wells for a few years. There were also some ladies from the local very successful 'Just Move; Walk to Run' group which meets every Monday night and has over 200 signed up members! Nevertheless, there were also some newbie runners who came along to this social run and it was truly amazing and rewarding to witness them running further than they ever have before!

As this was such a successful event, I have decided to organise more frequent llandrindodlife social runs.

The next social run will be on April 8th. Like the February event; meet at Llandrindod Wells Lake for a 10am start.

What: LLANDRINDODLIFE SOCIAL RUN

When: Saturday 8th April 2017

Where: Meet at Llandrindod Wells Lake for a 10am start

Route: Approx 4/5 miles on the roads around the town. Everyone runs together with planned stops and chances to regroup. No one will be left behind!

Free event but donations always welcome (Look out for the yellow donation box)

Enjoy a yummy 9Bar after the run!

I hope lots of people will come to this event and use the sport of running to become healthy and active whilst having fun getting to know different people from within the community.

All that's left to say is after reading this I would be grateful if you could please tell people about this event. Tell your friends, tell your family, tell a stranger you see running down Middleton Street! Please also share on social media to help spread the word. This is always very much appreciated!

I look forward to running with you all on April 8th!

RWG MOBILE

"RWG Mobile is run by people in Wales, for people in Wales...wherever you are."

Maybe you haven't heard of RWG Mobile before? I hadn't either until recently but read on to discover what this unique Welsh service has to offer the people of Wales.

First things first; you may be wondering what RWG stands for? The answer is Red, White and Green; like the colours on the Welsh flag. Using this name highlights the mobile networks' patriotism and their passion for all things Welsh and what Wales stands for.

"Before RWG Mobile was launched, there wasn’t a mobile network that belonged to Wales. A mobile network that was run by people in Wales, for people in Wales. One with a Welsh language service as standard. RWG Mobile set about to change that."

Other countries have their own mobile network so why should the people of Wales have to settle for less? Here you have Wales' very own mobile network which is suitable for everyone with the flexibility of no contract.

RWG Mobile is a pay-as-you-go mobile provider that gives you total flexibility of how you buy and consume your mobile services.

RWG gives you complete freedom over your mobile network and how you use your phone as it gives you the ability to buy your voice minutes, texts and data completely separately and to renew them when you wish to. If you accidentally go over your limits you won't be punished. By using RWG Mobile you are not locked to a long-term contract and so you are not paying for a service you don't use.

To use the RWG mobile network you can use sim cards, the RWG app or both. The RWG Mobile application is available via the Google Play Store and Apple Store. To top up, you can easily use the downloaded app, your local PayPoint store or via your account online.

RWG Mobile bundles are valid for 30 days and are drawn down from credit balance only. There are different bundles for voice minutes, texts and data so it's easy to find the one which suits you and your needs.

What is so special about the RWG Mobile app?

The RWG Mobile app provides additional phone numbers you can use for free and low cost calls and messaging without the need for an extra SIM card. App to app online calls and messages are free and unlimited. Users you can call and message for free are clearly highlighted in your app ‘Contacts’. You will need a WiFi or data connection to use the RWG Mobile app.

The best thing about this app is the fact it gives you the ability to have extra mobile numbers on your existing phone so you can have separate numbers for different aspects of your busy everyday life for business, social and personal use.

Features of RWG Mobile:

  • Extra mobile numbers for business and personal use
  • Free calls to other RWG users
  • Free chat via the RWG Mobile app with other app users
  • Low cost calls to any phone
  • Low cost SMS to any phone
  • 4G at no extra cost
  • First extra number is free
  • Get another business line without the need for an extra device
  • Keep your personal number private
  • Peronalised voicemail on each profile
  • Customise each RWG profile
  • Easily see who is calling you
  • Decide when you're available
  • International roaming
  • Free Wi-Fi calling

Another thing which is unique about RWG Mobile is the fact the customer service team are happy to help in English or yng Nghymraeg! They are able to provide you with a true Welsh service which I think is really special for the people of Wales.

RWG Mobile is a Welsh company, passionate about all things Welsh and all the things Wales stands for. I am Welsh athlete, with a passion for the country in which I live and run. Every time I pull on that Welsh vest and represent the red, white and green; I am extremely proud to be a part of this small but mighty nation.

There is no better feeling than running the hills of Wales and feeling alive on a windy and wild, Welsh hill top

It is on this note that I wish to tell you about how RWG Mobile are supporting me; my running ambitions and my community work and how through using the unique RWG Mobile network, you can support me too.

If you are currently using a pay-as-you-go network which is not RWG Mobile then I strongly advise you to switch to the red, white and green network, as not only will you be supporting a true Welsh company; you will be supporting a Welsh athlete who is helping to put our hometown of Llandrindod Wells back on the map.

RWG Mobile have provided me with a revenue share opportunity where I receive 15% rebate on top ups from any customer who I bring to their network. The customers who move to RWG Mobile will also receive 10% free on their first top up.

There are two ways of ensuring this works...
  1. Every time you top-up your RWG Mobile sim use the promotional code HEIDI. This will give you 10% free on your first top up and allow me to qualify for 15% rebate. This will help me with things such as travel and accommodation costs when I compete.
  2. If you have not yet got a RWG Mobile Sim then you can easily request one, free of charge here. In order to support me; all you need to do is put my name in brackets after your name in the first field and then your account is allocated to me to qualify for rebate. You will receive 10% free on your first top up.

Just add my name in brackets after yours... it's as simple as that!

The use of mobile phones has become part of every day life in the 21st century. If you are as passionate about Wales as I am; why don't you choose to drape your phone in the pride of the red, white and green Welsh flag and order your free RWG Mobile sim today!

Welsh people, Welsh companies, Welsh communities should stick together. Together us Welsh people can be a part of something wonderful.

Don't forget to follow RWG Mobile on Twitter and like them on Facebook to stay up to date.

Take 2 // Happy Home Gift Company

Regular readers of this community blog all about life in Llandrindod Wells will probably remember there was a post all about the wonderful shop that is Happy Home Gift Company last year. Now with 2017 in full swing, it's time to tell you all about what this little haven has in store for you all! Recently, I met with Gemma Staton (co-founder of Happy Home alongside John Knill) and here's some of the exciting things she had to tell me.
When Happy Home first opened, the idea was for it to be a gift shop which offered a few unique services. Take a look at last years' blog post to get an idea about some of the items they sell. In 2016 Gemma and John offered a number of services to the community such as key cutting, picture framing and t-shirt printing.
key cutting
This meant during 2016 Happy Home was a hive of activity. Alongside this the shop itself also underwent some building work. You'll see a difference downstairs now compared to last year and there is some very good reasoning behind this which I will reveal a little bit later in the blog post.

Happy Home also celebrated their first birthday in 2016!

In May 2016, Happy Home started offering engraving as one of their services to the community. This ensures they are definetly providing people with something unique and special besides selling a range of gorgeous gifts.

In the new year, this has expanded further as they are now able to offer engraving onto all sorts of items. Keyrings and trophy placs are just examples but they can do engraving onto any metal

some engraving examples
But that's not all! These engravings can also be personalised with a photograph or your own design. All you have to do is email the photo or provide them with a digital copy and this can be engraved onto any metal item of your choice; even onto any metal items that you bring in!

This engraving service is steadily growing with lots more people becoming aware of this unique service provided here in the community. The most popular so far is the keyring engraving.

At the end of August/early September 2016, Happy Home updated their printing range. Now they are able to print on a range of items such as mugs, phone cases, cushion covers, tote bags and lots more.

This printing service has been well received with Happy Home working in partnership with many groups in the community. Before the Summer holidays, the company collaborated with Llandrindod High School to produce the winning design from the annual Enterprise Challenge which linked in with the theme of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The products were available to buy with the profits going back to the school.

In October to tie in with the new town branding and the "Llandrindod Wellness" initiative Happy Home printed a range of mugs featuring the town branding logo and slogans.

Another personalised item which was received well over the festive period were the children's Santa sacks. These were particular popular during the series of late night Christmas openings during December which was a fabulous community event.

If you have a particular design you wish to be printed, as with the engraving all you need to do is provide Happy Home with an electronic copy and then you can sit back and wait for the magic to happen! This way, this service can very personalised and unique to your needs.

Nevertheless; these printed items do not have to personalised if you don't wish them to be and Happy Home have numerous designs for you to choose from. Their design book is expanding and this service is going from strength to strength so why don't you go and test it out for yourself!

I'm very lucky to say; whilst I visited the lovely shop, I had the privilege of having a sneak peek at the company's all new website. Happy Home Gift Company hope to be online by the Summer and will distribute nationally. How exciting is this!!

...which leads me on nicely to the physical changes you will see in the shop downstairs. The floor space of the shop is visibly smaller but this is no negative thing. It just means Happy Home have more space out the back for their office and their online distribution area which will in turn allow them to grow and become even more successful!

As well as all of this Happy Home Gift Company are continuing to sell loads and loads and loads of funky and lovely gifts inside the store with many new products being added throughout the year. Take a look at these pictures below to get an idea of what's instore for you when you take a trip to Happy Home after being inspired by this blog post.

It really is so important to shop local and support all your local businesses in the community. It is so easy to do that in Llandrindod Wells with shops like Happy Home Gift Company. Happy Home continue to thrive in this town and I look forward to seeing their continual growth this year and wish them the best of luck with the launch of their website!
